Special Alert 10
March 2, 1999

On February 17, 1999, the Tabulation Working Group of the Interagency Committee for Review of Standards for Data on Race and Ethnicity issued a report, "Draft Provisional Guidance on the Implementation of the 1997 Standards for the Collection of Federal Data on Race and Ethnicity." This guidance focuses on several three areas: collecting data using the new standards, tabulating data collected under the new standards, and building bridges to compare data collected under the new and old standards.

The Office of Management and Budget is seeking comment on this draft guidance. Following a two month period for discussion by stakeholders within and outside government, OMB expects to issue provisional guidance at the end of April.

The full 203 page text in PDF format of said guidance can be found at: http://www.multiracial.com/government/RACE.PDF

If you can't access the report due to computer memory or compatability problems, contact me at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it to arrange alternate means of obtaining the report.

The Multiracial Activist is still analyzing the report and will issue a comment letter later this month. Read it for yourself and form your own conclusions about how multiracials will be counted or not-counted in the next census. Remember, this is your and/or your children's right to government recognized self-identification at stake here!

When contacting federal agencies, always remember to be polite, but firm when expressing your concerns. Also, remember to mention which government report or guidance your comment is directed toward and provide your address and a daytime phone number for any questions that arise as a result of your comments. To comment on this draft guidance write to:
